Staying alert on the road is always important, but during a winter storm it’s vital. Refresh your memory with a few tips on how to safely drive during these harsh winter months and the crazy weather that can accompany them.
1. Stay alert and aware. Know what’s happening in front of you, behind you and to each side of you to the best of your ability. The more you know about what’s happening around you, the better your reaction will be if something does occur. Use extra caution when driving in areas that are more likely to freeze like entrance and exit ramps, in intersections, and on bridges. In low visibility, keep an eye out for brake lights on vehicles ahead of you.
2. Before beginning your journey, make sure your lights are on and working.
3. Keep other drivers in mind and keep a safe following distance between you and them. Quick decisions on their part can lead to unforunate circumstances for you. Also, while following vehicles, don’t ride on the ruts of other vehicles. Spinning wheels can pack snow into ice.
4. Go easy on the gas and brake pedals. Ease onto each one carefully and gradually. Slick pavement means a higher chance of a jacknife.
5. Slow down – plain and simple.
6. Minimize Distractions. This one should be a normal practice and not just when the winter weather hits. Turn your phone on driving mode so you aren’t receiving calls and texts while driving. Don’t eat so you can keep both hands on the wheel. A couple of seconds of distractions can lead to disaster.
